The music should complement the room not compete with it. Cocktail hour has its own atmosphere, dinner has another, and the dance floor changes again. The music should move with the celebration.

I watch who's dancing, who's responding and how the room is changing. Sometimes that means staying with a song longer. Sometimes it means changing direction completely.
